One of the officers with Number 4 Guard 40 Commando was a certain Lt. J. J.
Moore MC, who later as a Captain made his name with 'L' Company 42 Cdo RM at the Raid on Limbang. He would also go
on as a Major General to take command of the British Falklands war campaign and to finally accept the surrender of
the Argentinian forces.
Also, with 40 Cdo's Colour Party was Colour Sergeant O. B. Falconer, who was to later win
the George Medal for his efforts trying to save men from a plane that crashed at Luqa airport in May 1953
during a build up of troops to the Canal Zone.
The CO of 40 Commando Lt. Col. Martin Price DSO., who had won his DSO in the taking of
Madagascar. (rumour had it that he took a
detatchment ashore from HMS Ramilles as a diversion and misread his map, came up behind the Vichy French and
marched into the capital with bayonets fixed, whereupon the French thinking he was the main force duly surrendered
the island to him. The bit about the map was scuttlebutt. In our (Ted's)
mess was a bugler, whose father had been a sergeant in the HMS Ramilles party and was possibly the source of this
buzz).
All 'Bootnecks' will be familiar with the old saying
"There are only 2 things a Royal Marine fears - a Sailor with a rifle and an
Officer with a map"
