Cdo Royal Marines HMS Ocean 1956
Do you recognise any of these faces?
I was wondering if any of you can help me to try and find some of these Royal Marines from this
picture. The photo was taken on the 7th December 1956 on the deck of HMS Ocean when she arrived
back from the Suez canal zone.
My Dad is holding the top right corner of the flag and his name is Ray Thurston. Ray was a driver
with the Royal Marines from 1951 -1958.
Ray served in Malta, Egypt, Cyprus and Suez.
He also boarded HMS Pampura in May 1953, HMS Redoubt in February 1954, HMS Chaplet in June 1954 and HMS
Striker in September 1954.
He went out to Malta on HMS Cumberland in August 1956 then headed to the Suez Canal Zone from
there.
During his service Ray was in 3 Commando Brigade from
1952-1953, then in 40 Commando from 1954 - 1955 and then from 1955-1958 he
was in 42 Commando and he was based at Bickleigh barracks in
Plymouth.
Ray was close friends with Buck Taylor, Geordie Wilkinson, Mick Tidy and Sigs.
If you are any of these men in the picture or know of any of them and where they can be contacted please
could you get in touch with me as I have lots of pictures here that I would like to know more
about.
Please contact me via Eddie on this website with your contact details and I will definitely get back to you.
I hope there is somebody out there who can help! I look forward in anticipation to hearing from
you!
Below are a couple of videos of a model that I have built in memory of my dad who sadly passed away in
2001. It's a 9ft 8inch fully working model of HMS Ocean the carrier they all came home on from
Suez.
