539 ASRM

539 Assault Squadron (539 ASRM) was formed on 2 April 1984 and commissioned operational on 24 July 1984 to provide 3 Commando Brigade (3 Cdo Bde) with an integral amphibious capability. This came about as a direct response to lessons learned during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. The primary role of this unit is to deliver 3 Cdo Bde forces onto land from water and also to perform patrols on the sea and along waterways.

For the Falklands campaign the squadron was formed for the duration of operation Corporate, during which they carryied out operations to support the advance forces, the main landings and many covert landings for the SBS and SAS troops. Notably the squadron was a pivotal part of the amphibious section of the push forward to Bluff Cove.

Among most recent operations are Operation Telic. 539 ASRM supported 3 Cdo Bde as they took the Al Faw Penninsula. They carried out numerous operations including several landings whilst also dealing with the clearing of various waterways. 539 ASRM have continued to operate in Iraq, performing security patrols of Iraq's southern ports and waterway networks.

The Squadron has over 100 personnel and is based in Turnchapel on the outskirts of Plymouth. It is equipped with various types of Landing Craft including Hovercraft (LCAC), Rigid Raiding craft (RRC), Inflatable raiding craft (IRC) and Landing Craft Vehicle/Personnel.

Apology
I am extremely sorry for the lapse in updating this website and for not responding to contacts over the last 6-8 weeks

This has been due to me moving home to another country and having no access to the internet with the necessary software.

As you can imagine there have been a lot of enquiries in that time which have not been dealt with. I will endeavour to work through these as soon as possible.

Sorry again and thank you for understanding,
