The prize ships where HMS Temeraire lost Royal Marines

“The Fougueux, which, having fought against several of the enemy's ships,  had been left by them without having lowered her flag. She was dis-masted and unrigged, and floating an unmanageable hulk. On fouling the group of ships she was boarded by the Temeraire. The Fougueux was, however, beyond making serious resistance. Her brave captain, Baudouin, though, even then made an effort, but in vain. He was killed at the outset, and his second in command was wounded at the same moment; whereupon some men of the Temeraire sprang on board and took possession.”  According the report of Captain Lucas of the Redoubtable,

Ship's pay book number: (ML 149)  21 April 1803 to 15 January 1806 (Was at Trafalgar) Comments: Discharged 15 Jan 1806 Chatham Headquarters HMS Victory paid off. Wounded . James Godwin Peake, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (nee Godwin) Peake, was born in Stafford in 1779 and joined the Royal Marines at Chatham in 1796 as a 2nd Lieutenant.

He was promoted 1st Lieutenant in 1799 and in HMS VICTORY was the second in command of a detachment of 145 Royal Marines. When Captain Charles Adair, Royal Marines, fell in the fighting at Trafalgar Peake, though wounded, assumed command, supported by 2nd Lieutenants Lewis Roatley and Lewis Reeves.

On the last day of 1805, when the VICTORY was at Chatham preparing to pay off into refit and Nelson's body was lying in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich, the most senior officer of the Royal Marines wrote to the Admiralty observing that no Royal Marines had been included in the arrangements for the funeral. He tactfully suggested that the omission was due to the authorities' assumption that a sufficient number to form a Guard could not be found in time. He proposed, however, that one of about 100 could be formed from the Chatham Division and the detachment in HMS VICTORY. Accordingly 'a select band of seamen and Marines from the brave crew of the VICTORY' was brought to Chatham on 7 January 1806 'in order to attend the funeral of their late Commander', and the most senior surviving of the VICTORY's Royal Marine officers, Lieutenant James Godwin Peake, was chosen to act as one of the pall bearers.

Peake was promoted Captain Royal Marines in 1808 but tragically at the beginning of the following year he was drowned at Bermuda when the boat he was in upset. Coincidentally a brother of Lieutenant William Ram, a shipmate of Peake's in the VICTORY who was killed at Trafalgar, was also drowned in the same accident.” Reference "The Men Who Fought with Nelson etc. etc." - a Nelson Society publication.

Special comment: Subsequent to the preparation of this tribute to the Fallen at Trafalgar it has been learnt that it was pre-dated by a comprehensive study produced in 2005 as part of the Bicentenary Celebrations. A couple, the Ayshfords, completed a huge project on Trafalgar - that included all officers and men present and the casualties. It was available to buy on CD-ROM and the RMHS presented them with an award in recognition of their work. They drew together all of the available sources for casualties and it was major effort that involved research here, Spain and Gibraltar. Thus researchers, wishing more detailed information than contained herein are referred to :- The Archivist, Royal Marines Museum, Eastney, Southsea PO4 9PX

The above would not include those lost on prize ships in the storm or those dying of wounds.
There follows the names of officers killed & wounded.

NOTES:

The term 3rd Rate, when applied to a ship of the line simply meant that it did not pack as much firepower as a first or second-rate ship. A third-rate was a ship of the line mounting 64 to 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks. The 74-gun ship eventually became the most popular size of warship as although cheaper to operate and more manoeuvrable than a first or second-rate ship, it still had enough firepower to destroy any single opponent. At Trafalgar in 1805 these ships were the backbone of the victorious British fleet

Admiral Nelson had 27 ships-of-the-line. His flagship, HMS Victory, was one of three 100-gun first rates in his fleet. He also had four 98-gun second rates and twenty third rates. One of the third rates was an 80-gun vessel and sixteen were 74-gun vessels. The remaining three were 64-gun ships, which were being phased out of the Royal Navy at the time of the battle. Nelson

HMS NEPTUNE & HMS PRINCE, both 2nd Rate vessels with 98 guns are not included in this list as they suffered no RM casualties.

Likewise the 3rd Rate ships HMS AJAX, HMS ORION,HMS MINOTAUR .

The smaller vessels not involved in the fighting; HMS ENTREPENANTE, HMS EURYAYIS,HMS NAIAD,HMS PHOEBE,HMS PICKLE (Schooner)& HMS SIRIUS are similarly omitted for the same reason.

Apology
I am extremely sorry for the lapse in updating this website and for not responding to contacts over the last 6-8 weeks

This has been due to me moving home to another country and having no access to the internet with the necessary software.

As you can imagine there have been a lot of enquiries in that time which have not been dealt with. I will endeavour to work through these as soon as possible.

Sorry again and thank you for understanding,
